Daniel:
Verse by Verse

Part 7

Rexella: We are going to continue our study of the book of Daniel and I trust that your hearts have been blessed as much as our hearts have been blessed, because it is a mighty book. And chapter two and chapter seven portray the most comprehensive picture of history to its conclusion. Now, Iím going to begin with chapter seven right now, but do you agree with this statement Jack?

Dr. Van Impe: Yes, chapter two pictures the gentile nations, right up till the time of the end, and because it's this image it's all one piece, proclaiming unity. But now, we get to chapter seven and it's the same four empires but in the form of four beasts, diversity. And that means that there will be problems within the revived Roman Empire during many times over the course of their existence. So, it's not all going to be roses, as we see within the frame of the European Community. There will be times they agree, there will be times they disagree. When they disagree many will say, oh, that can't be what the Bible prophesies. Yes it is. Unity in chapter two, diversity in chapter seven. And Rexella Iíve been so excited because Daniel 12:4 says, shut up the words, seal the book of Daniel until the time of the end, knowledge shall be increased and many shall run to and fro. Daniel was to be a mysterious, closed, sealed book until the end. At the end time there would be those who would be given enlightenment from the Holy Spirit to expound this great portion we are going to do today. And this could well be the first video series ever to expound this book and to open the seal to the people.

Rexella: That's exciting to know! And isn't it good to live in a day and age when the book of Daniel can thoroughly be understood. Well, as I said Iím going to start with chapter seven. It is much like chapter two in that it introduces us to the times of the gentiles. And we should get that term in our minds. Would you like to give us the definition, times of the gentiles, Jack?

Dr. Van Impe: The Jewish people controlled Jerusalem until 586 B.C. Then according to Daniel chapter one, verse one, Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and his troops, marched into the holy city and took Jerusalem from these people. That was the beginning of the times of the gentiles. Gentile domination over Jerusalem. Here is an interesting sidelight. Jesus said in Luke 21:24, Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the gentiles, times of the gentiles, until the times of the gentiles be fulfilled. In other words, Jerusalem would always be under gentile control until it was about to end as far as the time of the gentiles is concerned. Isn't it amazing that in June 5th through 10th 1967 the Jews took Jerusalem. And they've had it ever since. But it is still the times of the gentiles but it proves that we are nearing the completion, the end time. Why? Because in Zachariah 14:2

14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
God says, I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle and they, the gentiles, shall take the city. But it's only for a matter of hours or days because at that moment after they take it, Zachariah 14:4
14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
says, his feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives, which is in front of, before Jerusalem on the east. So, gentile domination has lasted for over 25 centuries, and it began with Nebuchadnezzar and ends when Jesus Christ returns and takes Jerusalem back from the gentiles, who had it for just a few days. But the interesting part is that it's very near that time that they are going to make the move, because they couldn't take Jerusalem from the Jews unless the Jews had it. And in our lifetime the Jews took it.

Rexella: Excited about that aren't you?

Dr. Van Impe: Yes.

Rexella: There is another term though, the fullness of the gentiles, is that different Jack?

Dr. Van Impe: Yes. That has to do with salvation. When Jesus came John 1:11

1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
says, he came unto his own, the Jews. That's why Jesus said in Matthew 10, verses 5 and 6
10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
10:6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
to his disciples, go not into the way of the gentiles, nor into any city of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. It was to the Jew first, Romans 1:16.
1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
But there is more to John 1:11, he came unto his own, and his own received him not. They rejected him. Therefore verse 12 says, as many as received him, then the door was opened to the gentiles. Where? Remember Acts chapter 10? Peter sees this vision as he is on the rooftop of a sheet coming down with all kinds of animals, and he wants nothing to do with them because they're unclean. And God says, don't you call them unclean. And this is the way they felt about gentiles at that time, they were pagans. And God is telling this Jew, Peter, that he must go to a gentile, Cornelius, to give him the truth of the gospel. So, when one gets to verse24 of the 10th chapter through 45th verse, we find that Peter is preaching the message, and then, Cornelius and his household, gentiles, are baptized. And when one studies Romans chapters 9, 10 and 11, chapter 9 is the Jews past, chapter 10 is present, chapter 11 is future, we find that though the Jews are no longer in first place, like they were, God still loves his ancient people. Has God forsaken his people? Romans 11:1.
11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
No, because verse 26 says,
11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
all Israel shall be saved. That's when Jesus Christ returns, but watch it! In verse 17 of Romans 11,
11:17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
it says that the gentiles, the wild branches, were grafted into the tree, the Jewish tree, for it was originally provided for them. So, the fullness of the gentiles is the time when Cornelius was the first gentile brought into the family of God and lasts right through the end of time, because now gentiles and Jews have become one, in Christ Jesus, read Ephesians 2:13 and chapter 3, verses 1 to 6.
2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

1 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,
2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Rexella: All right. We are going to continue now. Chapter seven verse one, in the first year of Belshazzar King of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions, now this is the first time we have heard about a vision or a dream, other than the visions and dreams of a King. Daniel had a vision, and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters. Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. Now we have two things there Iím going to ask Jack right away. The four winds of the heavens and the four great beasts, would you give us the definition of both of those things please?

Dr. Van Impe: Chapters two and seven are very similar as you said a while ago, Rexella. And chapter two has this image and it has a head of gold, Babylon; chest and arms of silver, the Meads and the Persians; stomach and thighs of brass, representing Greece; two legs of iron, representing the Roman Empire; and then ten toes of iron mixed with clay and that pictures the revived Roman Empire, which I believe to be the European Community. Now in chapter seven the four winds and four beasts represent the same four powers, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome. And then you'll see later that on the fourth beast there spouts up ten horns, similar to the ten toes on the image, and again, it's the revived Roman Empire. The four winds are blowing upon the sea; and there are three seas in scripture, the Sea of Galilee, Dead Sea and the great sea is always the Mediterranean. And these nations have always been, in and are situated around the Mediterranean Sea, and winds blowing upon the sea picture trouble. And these nations have been very troublesome throughout history, as you'll see. Plus, when this E.C.. produces the antichrist we'll really know what trouble is. And Isaiah 57:20 says, the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. So that's what it all symbolizes.

Rexella: All right. We're going to go on now. Verses four through seven: the first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the Earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it. And behold another beast, a second, like a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, arise, devour much flesh. After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and break in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. Now, there we have the four beasts we're going to take them one at a time. The first one was like a lion and had eagles wings. Jack will you explain this first beast to us, please?

Dr. Van Impe: That is the same as the head of gold, it is Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian Empire. And the wings depict swiftness, as he conquered nations with his mighty armies. And then we see that the wings are being striped as his empire deteriorates. And it talks about a man here because of the humanitarianism of this Nebuchadnezzar, especially after his conversion experience as we saw a while ago on our tapes.

Rexella: All right. Then there was the bear, and it raised up itself on one side, the bear, Jack?

Dr. Van Impe: The Medes and Persians, and Darius headed up the Medes and Cyrus the Persians. But the Persians were much stronger their armies were far greater, and so the bear lifted on one side pictures the superiority of Persia.

Rexella: The leopard which had upon the back of it four wings of a foul. The leopard?

Dr. Van Impe: That is Greece. And again the wings picture the speed of Alexander the Great as he conquered one and one half million square miles of the globe.

Rexella: And the fourth was terrible and strong, it had iron teeth and ten horns, sounds awful.

Dr. Van Impe: Right. And that of course is the fourth empire, Rome. And the iron teeth are similar to the toes, in Daniel 2, on the image composed of iron mixed with clay. And the ten horns picture the revived Roman Empire. And Rexella people say, well how can we know all these things are so. Well the nations are named in Daniel 5:28, chapter 8, verses 20 and 21.

5:28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

8:20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.
8:21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

And then there was a prophet named Esdras and he wrote second Esdras and said, in 90 A.D., That there was no doubt about it the fourth empire was Rome and we see much concerning this empire in the future. And Rexella there have been so many scholars of recent days that have been saying this, that it is the revived Roman Empire and you have some tremendous ones.

Rexella: I have some here. 1890, Dr. Gabeline, author and scholar, said the ten horns will become the revived Roman Empire. Also 1908, now many of you have depended upon Dr. Scofield, you have the Bible by him, edited by him, editor of the Scofield Reference Bible, the whole vision is the last form of gentile world power, a confederation of ten nations which will be a revival of the old Roman Empire whose sphere will probably reach out beyond the old boundaries, since it will be a world power. In other words he is saying, what a sphere it will have, going way out. 1920, Dr. Harry Baltima, Christian reformed theologian, the Roman Empire will revive once more before the end of days and form that revived empire that will emerge ten kings. 1932, Dr. Ironside, Pastor of Moody Memorial Church, there will arise a great confederacy of nations springing forth out of an old Roman Empire and will become the devil's last trump card. 1940, Dr. Barnhouse, great presbyterian scholar and pastor, commentators of every school of thought have been forced to admit that Rome is envisioned in these prophecies of this there is no doubt. 1948, Dr. M.R. De Haan, founder of the Radio Bible Class, the restored Roman Empire is again taking a definite form. So we have many, many men right down through history Jack.

Dr. Van Impe: Oh, right Rexella! But it only started within the last century as far as God revealing these things to men so that we could unlock, unseal this mysterious book. We're living in tremendous times. Let me say this. The ten toes are mentioned in Daniel 2:41, 42 and 44

41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken
44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
and the ten horns in Daniel chapter 7 verses 7, 20, 24, Revelation 12:3, Revelation 13:1, Revelation 17 verses 3, 7, 12, and 16.
7:7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.
7:20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.
7:24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

12:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

12:7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

12:12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

12;16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

What do these ten toes and ten horns represent? Well let's go back to 1948 when Benelux came into power. Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg. Three. Then in 1957 France, Italy and Germany joined the three and now it's six, and the Treaty of Rome verified this amalgamation. Amazing! This is the revived Roman Empire and the Treaty of Rome says, we establish it. Then again in 1973 Britain, Ireland and Denmark joined for a total of nine. And then January 1, 1981, Greece became a member for ten and everyone said, this is it! This is it! Ten! Wait a minute. Daniel chapter 7 verses 7, 8, 20 and 24
7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.
8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
all indicate that it would grow to thirteen. After number 11, the little horn, came to power. Listen to this verse, Daniel 7:8, I considered the horns, ten, and there came up among them, the ten, another little horn, we will be discussing him very soon, number eleven, before whose face there were three of the original horns plucked up, pulled up by the roots. All right. In order to end up with ten after eliminating three you have to have thirteen. So number eleven was Spain, number twelve was Portugal, 1986, and soon, we believe, Austria will come into the movement and there will be thirteen. And then it will grow to a world empire, Revelation 13:7.
13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
And then, there will be some problems, as we said diversity among the four beasts and it will fall back down, but when it comes to it's climax there are only ten left. Because Daniel 2:44
2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
says in the days of these ten, the final ten, after all the manipulations take place shall the God of heaven set up his Kingdom which shall never be destroyed. So we see that we are coming toward the time of the end.

Rexella: I should say. Now Jack you almost quoted verse eight but Iím going to read it anyway. I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things. Now, who is this little horn? And when does he take power?

Dr. Van Impe: Martin Luther did two commentaries on the book of Daniel in the German language which have never been translated. But some scholars have taken some of his works and quoted Luther, who said, this is the New Testament antichrist for the future. With this I agree. Now he didn't understand many of the chapters that followed, because no one could understand them until the events prophesied started to happen as they have in our time. But Luther was right on in many, many instances. This little horn was not for that time in history but for the end time of Daniel 12:4

12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Why? Because all of the apostles, and Jesus, predicted that he would come in the future. I John 2:18,
2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
ye have heard that antichrist shall come, future. And then of course in Revelation 13, chapter 17 and chapter 19, the final events of the seven year tribulation period pictures, in these chapters, this antichrist in power. And Jesus also in Matthew 24:15 and Mark 13:14
24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

spoke about the abomination of desolation as being one of the end time events during the tribulation hour. So this little horn arises at the last day, out of this grouping of ten nations, which becomes thirteen, drops back. But since everything the foundation is now in existence, the E.C., He can rise and soon.

Rexella: Right. Verses nine and ten: I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of Days did sit, whose garments were white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. Now in verse nine, the Ancient of Days is mentioned. Who is this Ancient of Days and Jack, is he the judge?

Dr. Van Impe: This is Yahweh the Father. And Rexella, there are those who say this is Jesus Christ because these are the exact attributes of Revelation 1:14 and 15.

1:14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
1:15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
But then we have a problem because in this same chapter verse 13,
13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
the son comes to the Ancient of Days. So the Ancient of Days here is the Father. Why does he have these attributes? Because Jesus said, I and the Father are one, John 10:30.
10:30 I and my Father are one.
And what ever the Father has the Son has. Because Christ is the image of the invisible God, Colossians 1:15.
1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
And that pictures that.
